As of May 2022, Pennsylvania has recovered more than 80% of the 1.1 million jobs lost in the early months of the pandemic.

Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate is 4.8 percent, lower than where it was in March, dropping one-tenth of a percentage according to the Department of Labor and Industry. With the national rate being 3.6 percent, that 1.2 percent gap is still the widest in decades. Recovery is slowly making its way across the state, but there is still room for improvement.

New state figures indicate that Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate decreased in April while payrolls and workforce increased.

Non-farm payrolls in Pennsylvania accelerated to 11,400 jobs in April, primarily due to hiring in education, health services. manufacturing, leisure and hospitality sectors.

Unemployment in Pennsylvania fell to 308,000 individuals while employment gained to over 6 million employers and the labor force continued with strong gains with over 6.4 million jobs, according to a survey of Pennsylvania households.
